Walking from the old pier onto Birnbeck Island, visitors can then make their way down the direct route, under the canopies, where they get glimpses of the main building. Alternatively, they can wander down to the ticket desk and through the ramping landscape to the site.
In the beginning everything is still, two distinct entities. Water and rock mass coexists as individual entities. People exist between buildings and both are two distinct contrasting bodies. Water carves its route through stone. Desire lines define a route through a place. What is soft and fluid has the power to cut through a hard surface.
Starting at the foyer, the visitors have the choice to enter the multipurpose venue or to make their way up to the cafe that offers views towards Weston bay. The facade element is used to signify the areas accessible to the public. It frames the view towards the city and the ocean while it casts organic
shadows to the interior spaces.
